Graphic Artist – T-Shirt Designer Jonah Block Interview

Highland Park, NJ — Jonah Block, aka Biotwist, is t-shirt designer/graphic designer who hails from Highland Park, NJ.

Jonah’s focus is currently on making art for t-shirts and competing on sites like TeeFury, shirt.Woot, DesignByHumans and Threadless where he has been a member since March 2008.

Here’s some information Jonah was kind enough to share with us during the interview:

“I grew up almost ever learning disability it’s possible to have: ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, depression/anxiety, speech impediments and colorblindness and in a stifling orthodox Jewish setting too. The color blindness isn’t that big of a deal until you start making art for other people instead of yourself. I spend my time split evenly between working, drawing, gaming and socializing. I dropped out of college and trained to be a pro-wrestler, went to vocational graphic design school and finished. I finally found away to break into the world of t-shirt making. I love going to music/camping festivals and wish I could DJ and produce music.”

“If I wasn’t so challenged when it comes to writing I could have finished college and had some type of job with benefits. Right now I’m just focusing and making more art, keeping my name out there and trying to improve my craft.”

When did you start creating art?

When I was in preschool like everyone else. I just never stopped.

Was there a point when you began to take art more seriously?

Around 2007 when I started getting printed at Threadless.

Where did your “nome de plume” come from?

I have the name “Biotwist” which was a screename I made back when the internet was new because it has no numbers or trick spellings in it and I have been unable to bring myself to update it.

How would you best describe your style?

Pop surrealism? I’m not so good with labeling my own work.

At what age did you develop this style?

My current style probably developed the same time i got serious; it’s a compromise if what I’m
able to do and what I wish I could do.

Who or what are your artistic influences?

I taught myself how to draw by copying comic books that’s a huge influence on me. Jack Kirby’s Kinetic art work always rocked my world, now its fellow graphic designers like Alex Solis, Phile Jones and Heng Swee Lim.

When did you start designing t-shirts?

When I found out about Design by Humans from some kid wearing a cool t-shirt at party and I thought to myself “this is exactly what I’m looking for”.

Do you look at this type of art as business or just a hobby?

Both and if it was just one or the other I probably wouldn’t be able to keep doing this.

Do you have any business experience?

None and it’s killing me.

What motivates you in life?

My fears and trying to avoid them.

Are you single, married, or have a significant other?

Single.

Do you have a preference for screen printing or Direct-To-Garment ((DTG) printing?

Easily screen printing hands down.

Mac vs. PC?

I grew up with a PC prefer it. Plus after using Macs in design school I don’t see what the big deal is.

Favorite clothing brand?

Are you a fan of any sports?

What languages do you speak?

English and bits of Hebrew.

Do you play any instruments?

Do you have any favorite TV shows?

I don’t really watch TV any more but I dig stuff like 30 Rock and I’m hooked on Shonen type anime like Naruto and One Piece.

What is your preferred method of transportation (motorcycles, bicycle, car, walk)?

I rode my bike for years but now I’m all about my car.

What brands/models of cars do you like?

Toyotas that can take abuse.

If you watch or listen to the news, from what source(s)?

I’m hooked on Public radio. I love listening to NPR on WNYC.

What movies do you enjoy most?

Big budget action and classic slapstick.

Do you have any favorite books, book series, or authors?

I used to read a lot of sci-fi like Harry Harrison and Orson Scott Card.

Do you prefer smart-phones or not-so-smart phones?

I want a smart-phone but I love the battery life of my crappy phone.

Do you have any political stances (left, right, middle)?
I consider myself a free thinker and a realist but if you held a gun to my head I would lean to the left.

What is something that you hate or absolutely enrages you?

Everything, I’m too easily impassioned.

Graphic Artist – T-Shirt Designer Tobias Fonseca Interview

São Francisco de Paula, RS, Brazil — Tobias Fonseca is a Brazilian artist who works at his own studio in São Francisco de Paula, RS, Brazil. He enjoys illustrating t-shirts; good thing too, because it’s what he does for a living.

Tobias’ work can be seen on many t-shirt sites including Threadless, Design By Humans, Camiseteria, Woot, TeeFury, This Shirt Changes Lives, La Fraise to name a few.

Tobias, or “Tobe” was willing to share some personal information with us when we asked him to do an interview.

When did you start creating art?

I think most artists have started creating since as a child, for me at least was that, I always been creative, I created my own toys and stuff. I started to draw near 13 years old, doing some fanzines. I loved mangá at this point.

Was there a point when you began to take art more seriously?

I got a job in advertising and there I had to create some illustrations but it wasn’t permanent. I saw that I could live from my art when I had my first print design at La Fraise. I was receiving really good money at this time, so I left my job and started working with illustrations as a freelancer at home.

How would you best describe your style?

I don’t think I have a style, but I like to base my work off of things that I enjoy. I mean, simples things that make me smile, funny jokes, or clever situations. I think I have more of a conceptual line than a style. Many of my ideas come from nature, animals, and the feelings about them.

At what age did you develop this style?

I tried lots of things, and I am still trying. Now I prefer to create something that’s amusing to me rather than thinking “what others will like”. I don’t know if I’ll be able to pay my bills with this kind of thought but I’m enjoying it for now. I enjoy paying attention to what surrounds me; trees, birds, butterflies, leaves, and nature in general.

Who or what are your artistic influences?

Mostly actual t-shirts designers. There’s so many names. Mathiole, Nathan Pyle, Ramyb, Rogério Puhl, and Aled Lewis. I love Magritte’s and Van Gogh’s work but I’m not sure if they actually influence my work.

When did you start designing t-shirts?

I started on a Brazilian site called Camiseteria. It took a year of sending work before they were able to print my work.

Do you look at this type of art as business or just a hobby?

I think it’s a mix of work and hobby. I Hardly ever create designs by demand. I prefer creating something for myself at first, and then trying to sell it.

What motivates you in life?

Being happy. Is that enough? Looks simple, but It’s hard believe me. I’ve been trying to find it, but sometimes it’s hard to define what “happiness” really is. I try to do what is best for me and keep going!

Do you have a preference for screen printing or DTG (Direct-To-Garment) printing?

I couldn’t choose. I got really good results from both kinds of prints, and the quality really varies between one or other. But ok, I’d say DTG, just because it’s faster. LOL

Mac vs. PC?

I never really used an Mac computer so I can’t choose. I have a great PC that works really great – never saw a blue screen like everybody says, so it works for me!

Favorite clothing brand?

Hard to say. I’d go with Beagle, it’s a Brazilian brand, they create great jackets and stuff. As far as tees are concerned, I couldn’t say just one. I just had my Design By Humans time when all my t-shirts were from them! Today I’m wearing lots of Threadless t-shirts and some hoodies from Camiseteria (It’s winter here).

Do you engage in physical activity (work out, yoga, martial arts)?

I try to go to the gym…Sometimes LOL

Do you cook?

Not a even fried egg, I’m a better eater.

Are you a vegetarian or vegan?

I’m not a vegan because there is meat everywhere here, but I enjoy those kind of dishes (to be honest I’m having a Veggie Pizza right now from a place called Tea House, near my home!)

What languages do you speak?

Portuguese and English. Ok, my English is not that good but I can ask for food and answer some interviews – Thanks to my teacher for reviewing it!

Do you play any instruments?

Not really, but I like to sing – in the shower.

Who are your favorite music artists?

Gavin DeGraw, Natasha Bedingfield, old times of Nelly Furtado and now listening to a Brazilian singer called Mallu Magalhães.

Do you have any favorite TV shows?

I’m loving Game of Thrones, Nurse Jackie, Breaking Bad and lots of others when I have time.

What is your preferred method of transportation (motorcycles, bicycle, car, walk?)

I prefer to walk because I live in a really small town and everywhere that I have to go is nothing more than 4-5 blocks from my home. Really nice place.

If you watch or listen to the news, from what source(s)?

Just internet, I really can’t stand television.

What movies do you enjoy most?

I just saw Prometheus, really great effects! But I have to admit I enjoy dramas mostly.

Do you have any favorite books, book series, or authors?

Harry Potter forever! These days I’m reading Game of Thrones, waiting for Dance With Dragons that will be launched here in Brazil soon.

Do you prefer smart-phones or not-so-smart phones?

I thought iPhone was too expensive and useless…Now I can’t live without mine.

What is something that you hate or absolutely enrages you?

People that try to force their beliefs onto others. Let people be who and what they want to be!

Graphic Artist – T-Shirt Designer Craig Watkins Interview

Orange County, California — Craig Watkins has been a freelance illustrator since 1999. Working with a diverse range of clients like Disney, Billabong, DreamWorks and Urban Outfitters has enabled him to hone his skills and develop a portfolio of work that most anyone would enjoy.

He paints, doodles and draws the world just as he sees it. Craig likes to develop characters with a strong narrative and then drags them kicking and screaming into darkness.

Watkins uses traditional materials and digital packages to create his art. Craig is currently the Creative Director at DesignByHumans.com by day and a freelance machine during the night. ‘No rest for the wicked’ is his motto.

Craig was kind enough to answer some questions we had for him. Here’s what he had to say…

When did you start creating art?

When I was a little kid I had a baby sitter who was good at drawing and I sat for hours drawing with her. She was pretty vile but I was inspired to be a better drawer than her, hundreds of thousands of hours later I think I am now.

Was there a point when you began to take art more seriously?

When I was 12 or 13 a local dance school commissioned me to design a character for their T-shirts. This was the first time I thought “Hey I could make a living out of this”. I learned a harsh lesson, firstly they never paid me and secondly they still print that same tee today.

Where did your nickname, or “nome de plume” come from?

The name ‘wotto’ was given to me by my super talented and very good friend Woody when I lived with him in London. One day he called me ‘wotto’ and it just stuck. He also designed the first wotto logo I used on artwork.

How would you best describe your style?

Doodly, dark and cute, controlled mess…

At what age did you develop this style?

I always drew characters as a kid, Mickey Mouse, Garfield etc and I think that was good practice. Once I got bored of that I started drawing my own characters and over time a style developed. I still feel my style is developing but I also know my style is recognizable now, that was something I always wanted.

Who or what are your artistic influences?

I have been influenced a lot over the years and not all of them were artists, some are friends or experiences. I studied a lot of European artists work early in my education and then I moved onto Modern Artists in my university years. Once out of education I was attracted to the street scene and that changed everything for me. Now I am influenced by other illustrators and T-shirt designers. Influences are weird, I kinda like how they creep into your work almost without you knowing.

When did you start designing t-shirts?

2007. I was designing stuff for more commercial markets at the time and I was getting pretty bored. I stumbled upon a contest site and decided it would be a good outlet for me. I entered and won pretty quickly. Then I went on a 4 year T-shirt designing frenzy. I won at most contest sites and attracted the attention from apparel labels like Billabong.

Do you look at this type of art as business or just a hobby?

Both. It’s not what I do full time but when you win regularly you can make some decent cash. The key is to market your winning designs so the company you win with get good sales and you gather a loyal following. T-shirts are a good way to experiment with styles and ideas but if you can consistently knock out cool designs it can be rewarding financially. Note to newcomers: It takes years.

Do you have any business experience?

Not really, nothing to yell about. I have sold my own work and goods with success and I negotiate deals with clients all day but business is a complex beast. An interesting beast that I am learning more and more about all the time.

What motivates you in life?

To provide for my family and leave my mark on this grubby world. I like it when someone takes the time to say “Hey I like your art”.

Are you single, married, or have a significant other?

Married with a very small baby who is extremely cool. My wife and I met through T-shirts and between us we have enough to start a t-shirt empire.

Do you have a preference for screen printing or DTG (Direct-To-Garment) printing?

DTG is becoming impressive technology. I recently saw some machines that both delivered with colors and quality. However, for now at least I prefer screen printed goods. I work alongside a screen printers and I love to be there, smelling the ink and watching the process unfold. It’s a very interesting process with many small stages that require skill and a keen eye.

Mac vs. PC?

Mac.

Favorite clothing brand?

I like many but I wear mostly Design By Humans tees these days. I also wear jeans from Europe because I like the fit, G-star Raw.

Do you engage in physical activity (work out, yoga, martial arts)?

Not as much as I should. I walk a great deal, lately around my house to soothe my baby but I have always loved walking. I also love mountain biking but I haven’t had a bike since moving to the USA.

Are you a fan of any sports?

I watch soccer or football as us Brits call it.

Do you cook?

I can but I don’t. My wife is an amazing cook and should have made it her career.

Are you a vegetarian or vegan?

I was vegetarian for 1 year as a teenager but bacon got the better of me.

What languages do you speak?

English and some French.

Who are your favorite music artists?

This changes a lot but currently I am listening to Paulo Nutini, Kings Of Leon and Young and the Giant.

Do you have any favorite TV shows?

Breaking Bad, Southland, Walking Dead and SpongeBob Square Pants

What is your preferred method of transportation (motorcycles, bicycle, car, walk)?

Walking but here in L.A you have to drive.

What brands/models of cars do you like?

Volkswagen and Porsche (The vintage ones)

Do you produce art in any other mediums?

I use illustrator, paint, ink and pencil mostly.

If you watch or listen to the news, from what source(s)?

The news freaks me out. American news just seems to want to scare the shit out of you. I read stuff online but I am not a huge follower of the news. I don’t really want to know what the latest celebrity is up to.

What movies do you enjoy most?

Dark ones. Not horrors but dark like Old Boy and Fight Club. I also love animated movies.

Do you have any favorite books, book series, or authors?

A Series of Unfortunate Events, anything by Roald Dahl and non-fiction about dangerous or crazy folks.

Do you prefer smart-phones or not-so-smart phones?

I have a smart phone and its useful but I don’t have the addiction. Or maybe I am in denial?

Do you have any political stances (left, right, middle)?

Politics are ridiculous to me. Rich people buying votes and making decisions the general public don’t want. I like the rise of people power since the internet appeared. People should decide what happens in their communities and cities. I am not into violence but I do love to see people stand up to the powers that be and say “no”.

What is something that you hate or absolutely enrages you?

I get annoyed by a few things.

Almond Joy – nothing about it is Joyful.

Commercials – I never signed up for that brainwashing.

People who are rude – manners cost nothing.

That my cat always shits in the litter tray within 30 seconds of me cleaning it.

Needing a pooh when you come out of the shower.

People who tut.

People who make money from ripping off others or piggy backing on someone else’s idea.

That kids today want to be famous for being famous instead of being astronauts.

Belo Horizonte, Brazil — Matheus Lopes Castro (aka Mathiole) is a 25 year old guy who’s been working with art and design since he was 15. His artistic influences are René Magritte, Salvador Dali, Roy Linchenstein, Andy Warhol, Ashley Wood, Takehiko Inoue, Eishiro Oda, Akira Toryama, James Jean, Jeremy Gedes and many others.

Mathiole is in the process of starting a t-shirt business with two friends who are also talented artists. They’ve opened a studio and will soon launch their first t-shirt collection.

“It’s my biggest passion and I feel very fortunate to be able to work with something that pleases me so much. I have big plans for myself in the future.” Matheus said. “Hopefully I’ll be able to fulfill my expectations and get things done. I don’t want to spoil it, but it’s a dream of mine to have my own t-shirt brand. I have everything planed but it will take a lot of time to complete, the way I see it in my head. I’ll let you know!”

Here’s what else Matheus had to say when we interviewed him:

When did you start taking art seriously?

I guess it was when I first study art, when I was 14, I started a comic course that opened my eyes to what would be my greatest passion.

If you go by one, where did your nickname, or “nome de plume” come from?

It was just a fun way to call my name, Matheus. There isn’t actually a meaning for that.

How would you best describe your style?

I think it’s a lucid, imaginative, surreal and positive style concept wise. Aesthetically, it’s a blend of colors, imprecision and experimentation.

I have someone, it’s not actually a girlfriend neither friends with benefits, is something between that, haha, its kinda hard to explain but it’s a good relationship. I don’t see myself marring on the near future. I’m still young and I fell like I need to party real hard before abandon this lifestyle

Absolutely not. I’m carnivore, but I respect those who are vegetarian or vegan, as long as they respect me (which is kind of hard to happen).

I myself have already made 3 outfits today, and this was during my lunch break. I don’t get paid to make outfits. I’m just having too much fun.

As our i store affiliations increase so will the outfit combinations. We’re working hard to extend our lingerie section. Guys imagine your ladies walking to your bed wearing sexy black lingerie, while toting a pair of sexy black boots ;) . Trust me we are trying to make that fantasy a reality.

But until then Enjoy shopping our Kickzz section. If your a shoe nut, I’m sure you’ll be in paradise.
